Happy Birthday Benjamin!

Today our sweet little guy turned two years old. As all parents say, it feels just like yesterday that he was born. The time has flown by and it truly is bittersweet watching him grow from a precious little baby to a sweet, fun-loving little boy.

We started Benjamin's special day with homemade cinnamon rolls before Nathan went on duty, complete with candles and a balloon.

After his daddy left for work, Benjamin spent the morning playing with his new Thomas-the-Train set Grandma Peggy and Papa Kevin gave him. Then it was off to the park where he ran and jumped, slid and climbed on the play structure before chowing down on an In-n-Out burger and fries (his favorite!) with Aunt Laura and cousins Weston and Wyatt. I made macaroni and cheese for dinner (another fave of his) and we took a trip to the fire station to see Daddy and the "woo-woo's" before stopping for a scoop of ice cream on the way home. It was a day all about Benjamin and we loved every minute of it. Happy Birthday Benjamin! We love you!

Potty Training: Day 4

So technically we should be completely potty trained by now, considering I followed a three day method. However, upon further reading of that said method, I realized two things: one, it said that the child should be at least 22 months of age and Benjamin isn't quite 21 months old yet. Oops. Also, it did not factor in the vomiting-diarreah scenario, which we were so lucky to experience this weekend (can you hear the sarcasm?). However, the book did say not to stop for any reason, so we plugged along. So how is he doing? Well, he hasn't worn a diaper since Thursday at 2:30 pm. Out of 23 times of-ahem- relieving himself, 12 times were done on the toilet. That is over a 50% success rate, people! Give it up for the little, not-quite-even-21-months, guy! Obviously, he is not 100% potty trained. He peed in his underwear this afternoon, but this time he told me just as he started to go. An hour later he told me before he needed to urinate and we made it to the toilet where he c...

Must Be Doing Something Right

Emily Post would be so proud of Benjamin. Nathan and I firmly believe that children need to always be polite and respectful so when he was just mere months old we started teaching him those two crucial words: Please and Thank you (I guess that's actually three words.) It started (and continues) with modeling. His smiles would elicit an excited "Thank you!" from us beaming parents. We would kindly (or sometimes through gritted teeth) ask him if he would please stop crying so we could all get some sleep. When he would sign for some cheerios, I would say to him, "Cereal please?" After I gave it to him, I'd say "Thank you, Mommy." Pretty soon he was signing the words back and a short while later actually saying them when prompted. However, now we don't even have to prompt him (most of the time). When he asks for something he tacks on "Pease." He responds with a sweet "Thank-oo". It melts my heart when I do something for him...

Noteworthy Moments

So often Benjamin says or does something that just stops me cold. They are so sweet or funny or ridiculous that I find myself thinking at these moments, "I should write this stuff down." So here are a couple of such moments: Moment #1 Last week, Benjamin fell down while running on the driveway. I know, I know, not a good idea to let him wear rainboots and shorts while playing soccer on an asphalt driveway. But the kid adores those boots and he looked so darn cute...but I digress. So I picked him up and dried his tears before cleaning the skinned knee and applying a band-aid, which instantly distracted him. Two days later, while in the car, Benjamin was reliving the event and noted that he cried when he fell. I said to him, "But then Mommy came over to pick you up and give you a hug, right?" "Why?" he asked. "Because I love you and I wanted to make you feel better," I replied, looking at him through the rear-view mirror. After a b...
