Thankful

As cliche as it might be, I figured that today is a good time to list a few of the things I am grateful for. So in no particular order...
  • My espresso machine: Nathan got it for me three Christmas's ago and it has allowed me to have a peppermint mocha almost every day since. :)
  • Our fireplace: Though outdoor temperatures dropped to 20 degrees last night, our home was a toasty 92, thanks to the awesome fire my husband started. It may have gotten so hot in our living room that we had to retreat to the back bedroom to keep from melting, but that was just a minor inconvenience.
  • Basic kitchen tools: Benjamin has been occupied for hours these past few weeks with simple items such as tongs, spatulas, and ladles. It's been great for the both of us.
  • Benjamin's napping ability: Since he faithfully takes a 2-3 hour nap each day, I get to take a 2-3 hour nap each day.
  • Craig's List: Not only have I sold a ton of stuff that I couldn't even give away at yardsales, but I've scored some pretty great items as well. It's also a fabulous time waster (as is Facebook!)
  • My extended family: I have such a great network of people who babysit, sew, cook, socialize with, and even clean for me. I don't know how I got so lucky to have them in my life.
  • My husband: Where do I even begin? He is an amazing man who would give the shirt off his back to help a friend in need. He is one of the hardest workers I know and takes his responsibility to provide for his family very seriously. Because of these qualities in him, I am blessed to be a stay-at-home mother and wife, which is one of the greatest gifts he could give me. The man can fix nearly anything and has literally built the house around us. Not only does he provide the basics for our family, but he works multiple jobs so we can have nice things and create fun memories together. To top it off, he adores our son and spends as much time as he can showing him just how much. I've lost count the number of times Nathan has told Benjamin that he loves him, and every time I hear him say it again, I thank God for giving me not only a great husband, but a truly wonderful father for my children. I may not know much about anything, but I do know this: our children will always know that their parents love them more than life itself.
  • My children: When I look at Benjamin I am struck by the amazing love that I have for him. Sometimes I think my heart could burst for the amount of emotion that overwhelms me at times. Isn't it incredible that in a few short weeks, I will get to experience that love twice as much? I am so blessed to not only have one beautiful, precious little boy, but two. I can't wait to meet our latest addition.
So to sum up, God has truly blessed my life in so many ways, with an awe-inspiring family, devoted friends...

and Starbucks coffee. :)

Feeling the Love

My last post was, um...shall we say a bit...depressing? The truth is, I was not in a good place when I wrote that and I hadn't been in quite awhile. After publishing that entry, I stared at it on my computer screen and finally recognized it for what it was...a cry for help. So that same night I emailed some of my closest friends and laid it all out there. Here is a brief excerpt from that email: "I need a friend. I am desperately lonely, so I am reaching out to you ladies. I know that everyone is busy. We all have children, husbands, and homes that need tending, but personally, in my efforts to take care of those precious things, I am losing myself. So I am putting friendship on the priority list and humbly asking you to be my friend...We all need a little help sometimes. I'm finally putting aside my pride and asking for it. I hope to hear from you soon." Then I waited. For some reason I was so nervous about what the responses would be! I think that everyone wo...

Potty Training: Day 4

So technically we should be completely potty trained by now, considering I followed a three day method. However, upon further reading of that said method, I realized two things: one, it said that the child should be at least 22 months of age and Benjamin isn't quite 21 months old yet. Oops. Also, it did not factor in the vomiting-diarreah scenario, which we were so lucky to experience this weekend (can you hear the sarcasm?). However, the book did say not to stop for any reason, so we plugged along. So how is he doing? Well, he hasn't worn a diaper since Thursday at 2:30 pm. Out of 23 times of-ahem- relieving himself, 12 times were done on the toilet. That is over a 50% success rate, people! Give it up for the little, not-quite-even-21-months, guy! Obviously, he is not 100% potty trained. He peed in his underwear this afternoon, but this time he told me just as he started to go. An hour later he told me before he needed to urinate and we made it to the toilet where he c...

Must Be Doing Something Right

Emily Post would be so proud of Benjamin. Nathan and I firmly believe that children need to always be polite and respectful so when he was just mere months old we started teaching him those two crucial words: Please and Thank you (I guess that's actually three words.) It started (and continues) with modeling. His smiles would elicit an excited "Thank you!" from us beaming parents. We would kindly (or sometimes through gritted teeth) ask him if he would please stop crying so we could all get some sleep. When he would sign for some cheerios, I would say to him, "Cereal please?" After I gave it to him, I'd say "Thank you, Mommy." Pretty soon he was signing the words back and a short while later actually saying them when prompted. However, now we don't even have to prompt him (most of the time). When he asks for something he tacks on "Pease." He responds with a sweet "Thank-oo". It melts my heart when I do something for him...
