The Maiden Voyage

We took our new camper out this weekend. We wanted to go somewhere close by just in case something went wrong, so we picked Port San Luis. I am embarrased to say that neither Nathan nor I had ever been there before, even though we were born and raised here on the Central Coast. But even though it was our first time there, it definitely won't be our last.

We got there Friday afternoon and found a place right above the beach, next to a staircase leading down to the sand. We pulled in and ten minutes later were all set up. (Man, I love RVing!) Benjamin was still asleep in the car, so Nathan and I sat down in our cozy chairs and watched the ocean for a bit while he finished his nap. Then the three of us went for a walk to the end of the pier. It had been quite awhile since Benjamin had been to the beach, so it was so much fun to watch him experience the sand and water. As I set him down on the ground, he gingerly took a step or two, testing out this new grainy texture. After he determined that it was safe, off he ran! He explored kelp, seaweed (is there a difference?) and those little bubble things that you can pop off of them. Nathan showed him how to stomp on them which he took great delight in trying for himself. We found a perfect sand dollar and chased the waves (more like they chased us) before heading back to our campsite for dinner. Benjamin watched a movie while Nathan and I cooked (and I thought we didn't need a DVD player in the camper...I was wrong. :) and after dinner we enjoyed homemade cookies by the fire. Perfection.

The next day was a little slow going considering the three of us only got about 3 hours of sleep since Benjamin got sick. Poor little guy was coughing all night and just couldn't get comfortable. He came to bed with us, which only made things slightly better. He stopped crying, but man, does that little guy move a lot in his sleep! Since we were all exhausted, we had a leisurly breakfast of blueberry pancakes and then went for another walk to the pier. This time we were treated with a dozen sea lions frolicking in the water! They were so cute and we were able to get really close to a few that were lounging underneath the pier. Benjamin loved them. We also got a close up view of some pelicans, which are pretty funny looking birds, and some crabs as well. We packed everything up after we had some lunch and hit the beach one more time before heading home. Benjamin was asleep before we got to the top of the grade.

So even though our maiden voyage with the new camper was short, we had a really nice time together and vowed that we would be back soon. Aren't we lucky that we live so close to such amazing places?

Oh yeah, and if you are wondering why I don't have any pictures posted, it's because the batteries in my camera were dead, as were my backup batteries. Note to self: get a pack of batteries to leave in the camper.

Feeling the Love

My last post was, um...shall we say a bit...depressing? The truth is, I was not in a good place when I wrote that and I hadn't been in quite awhile. After publishing that entry, I stared at it on my computer screen and finally recognized it for what it was...a cry for help. So that same night I emailed some of my closest friends and laid it all out there. Here is a brief excerpt from that email: "I need a friend. I am desperately lonely, so I am reaching out to you ladies. I know that everyone is busy. We all have children, husbands, and homes that need tending, but personally, in my efforts to take care of those precious things, I am losing myself. So I am putting friendship on the priority list and humbly asking you to be my friend...We all need a little help sometimes. I'm finally putting aside my pride and asking for it. I hope to hear from you soon." Then I waited. For some reason I was so nervous about what the responses would be! I think that everyone wo...

Potty Training: Day 4

So technically we should be completely potty trained by now, considering I followed a three day method. However, upon further reading of that said method, I realized two things: one, it said that the child should be at least 22 months of age and Benjamin isn't quite 21 months old yet. Oops. Also, it did not factor in the vomiting-diarreah scenario, which we were so lucky to experience this weekend (can you hear the sarcasm?). However, the book did say not to stop for any reason, so we plugged along. So how is he doing? Well, he hasn't worn a diaper since Thursday at 2:30 pm. Out of 23 times of-ahem- relieving himself, 12 times were done on the toilet. That is over a 50% success rate, people! Give it up for the little, not-quite-even-21-months, guy! Obviously, he is not 100% potty trained. He peed in his underwear this afternoon, but this time he told me just as he started to go. An hour later he told me before he needed to urinate and we made it to the toilet where he c...

Must Be Doing Something Right

Emily Post would be so proud of Benjamin. Nathan and I firmly believe that children need to always be polite and respectful so when he was just mere months old we started teaching him those two crucial words: Please and Thank you (I guess that's actually three words.) It started (and continues) with modeling. His smiles would elicit an excited "Thank you!" from us beaming parents. We would kindly (or sometimes through gritted teeth) ask him if he would please stop crying so we could all get some sleep. When he would sign for some cheerios, I would say to him, "Cereal please?" After I gave it to him, I'd say "Thank you, Mommy." Pretty soon he was signing the words back and a short while later actually saying them when prompted. However, now we don't even have to prompt him (most of the time). When he asks for something he tacks on "Pease." He responds with a sweet "Thank-oo". It melts my heart when I do something for him...
